generation

met annette last week and we were talking about alot of stuff. i think just today then i realised, indeed, subtlety, a new generation has emerged. so far i've only realised it in church, in youth alive. but it's true, that even as a new pastor takes over youth alive, new leadership is emerging and things are changing.

i've seen how the old leadership works/worked. and it's very different from what is happening now. the obvious would be that the band holds very new members. not the very old mm members even. those ppl who play in the church band now are ppl who may have only joined mm for a year. and in terms of cell leadership, as new leaders rise, they begin to take on a new leadership style, different from that of the older generation, so to speak. a new generation is forming and different from what we had before.

to bring this to a very worldy point of view, we are the Y generation. some stats are:
97% own a computer
94% own a cell phone
76% use Instant Messaging.
15% of IM users are logged on 24 hours a day/7 days a week
34% use websites as their primary source of news
28% own a blog and 44% read blogs
49% download music using peer-to-peer file sharing
75% of students have a Facebook account
60% own some type of expensive portable music and/or video device such as an iPod.

this was done as a survey with US college students.

this generation wants to grow up fast and has the excitement to face many challenges in life. because this generation has been brought up in the IT world, everything has to be quick and instant.

and even while this generation of youths want to grow up fast, and i noticed how fast these youths want to grow up and act maturedly, they still carry that sense of youngness. and even youths as old as 17, 18, they don't actually have maturity as their main feature, if i would phrase it that way, but more of a "i'm still young" feeling. unlike the generations before, 17,18 year olds would be way matured that even young people who are above 20 because of their constitution at that time.

it's like even though they learn adult stuff very quickly and at a very young age, they do not seem to mature in terms of character and thinking, which the cause of it could be taking things in life for granted.

i would classify myself somewhere between gen X and gen Y. haha. i have an old ppl mindset but adapting to a new genetion concept. just like if i would apply methods to my leadership, i would most prob apply smth that is in between what ps rach and ps aaron would do. something not that harsh and something not that merciful.

haha. but that's how i've always been; somewhere in between.

my mom would always complain how different the people/youths now are from her times, but i guess that even though a new culture, a new generation is uprising, that's how to world is gg to be and everybody has got to think the same way else the world wouldn't function. soon, peace treaties are gg to come up with wacky clauses and stuff.

and even as i type this now, i'm being reminded of the 3 generations of israelites from coming out of egypt to wandering in the desert to settling in the promise land. ultimately, the 3rd generation of israelites took things for granted and they didn't have the same experiences of what their grandfathers had when they saw how God parted the red sea and delivered them from pharoah. in singapore, a parallel would be that the generation that's growing now is the 2nd generation of israelites, that we can understand how singapore came to independence and still try to grow and mature and stuff like that. but when the 3rd generation of singaporeans come about, maybe that's when Jesus is going to come back? hahahahaha...

i'm thinking too much aren't i? aha
